Amazon Will Publish Future James Bond Games After 007 First Light Hit

The shift hands MGM and Amazon Game Studios publishing control and could fold Bond games into Amazon’s wider TV and streaming plans.

Overview

  • 007 First Light has been an early commercial and critical hit, selling roughly 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours and making sequels likely.
  • Amazon gaming chief Jeff Gattis told Polygon that future Bond sequels will be handled by MGM and, in theory, by Amazon Game Studios because Amazon now owns the Bond IP.
  • IO Interactive developed and self-published First Light under an earlier deal that predated Amazon’s control, but IOI will not self-publish future Bond titles.
  • Amazon issued a clarification saying it holds the rights to future Bond games, that it has a strong relationship with IO Interactive, and that it is too early to discuss specific projects or commitments.
  • The key questions going forward are whether IO Interactive will be contracted to develop sequels, how Amazon will integrate games with Prime Video projects, and how Amazon’s mixed first-party gaming record will affect the franchise.
