Amazon Van Recovered After GPS Sends Driver Onto Hazardous Broomway Tidal Path

Officials warn the centuries-old route on MOD land is not a vehicular roadway.

Overview

  • HM Coastguard Southend said the van drove via Wakering Stairs onto The Broomway while following directions toward Foulness Island and became stranded on mudflats through high tide.
  • The driver exited the vehicle safely and reported the incident to Amazon, according to the coastguard.
  • Officers contacted QinetiQ, which confirmed the van had entered the mudflats the previous evening on land controlled by the Ministry of Defence.
  • Amazon arranged for a local farmer to extract the vehicle, and officials later confirmed the van had been removed as the coastguard stood down once safety and recovery were assured.
  • Authorities reiterated that The Broomway is an approximately six-mile, 600-year-old tidal footpath with restricted access and a long-standing reputation for danger, with parish records cited by the BBC attributing 100 deaths to the route.
