Overview
- Amazon, which on Wednesday confirmed the change, will block buying, borrowing, and downloading on defined older Kindles and first‑generation Kindle Fire tablets starting May 20, 2026.
- Books already stored on those devices will still open, but redownloading past purchases and transferring Amazon e‑books over USB to those models will stop.
- The cutoff targets hardware released from 2007 to 2012, including Kindle 1st gen, DX and DX Graphite, Keyboard, 4, Touch, 5, Paperwhite 1st gen, plus 2011–2012 Kindle Fire models such as Fire HD 7 and HD 8.9.
- Amazon did not give a technical reason for the move, saying only that the devices received at least 14 years of support, with some supported up to 18 years.
- To ease the switch, Amazon is offering affected users a reported 20% discount and a Kindle Store voucher, and customers can keep accessing their libraries through the Kindle app on phones and tablets.
