Amazon Tests Alexa+ in India With Invite-Only Hindi Beta

The test will refine Alexa+ for Hindi code-mixed speech ahead of a wider rollout.

Overview

  • Amazon has begun live testing of Alexa+ in India and emailed select customers asking them to sign up for an invite-only Hindi beta, with registration materials dated June 22.
  • The invitation warned the beta may contain bugs, give inaccurate answers, and mispronounce local words, reflecting Amazon’s effort to surface localization and accuracy issues during controlled trials.
  • Alexa+ is not yet available to the general public in India and Amazon has not announced a launch date or confirmed whether India will follow the existing Prime/free or paid subscription pricing used in other markets.
  • The beta aims to adapt the generative assistant to Hindi and the common practice of mixing Hindi and English in speech, targeting more than 600 million Hindi speakers who could use voice as a primary way to access AI services.
  • If the test succeeds, a localized Alexa+ could speed consumer adoption of voice AI in India and heighten competition with other local AI voice projects, while also forcing Amazon to solve accent, code-switching, and accuracy challenges before wider release.
