Amazon Opens Logistics Network to All Businesses With New Supply Chain Services

The move signals a push to sell its in-house logistics as a service to capture business shipping budgets.

Overview

  • Amazon, which launched Amazon Supply Chain Services on Monday, opened its freight, distribution, fulfillment and parcel network to any company through a single sign-up console.
  • The offering spans ocean, air, rail and road freight plus distribution and 2–5 day parcel delivery, drawing on more than 200 U.S. fulfillment centers and a fleet of about 80,000 trailers, 24,000 intermodal containers and 100+ aircraft.
  • Early customers include Procter & Gamble moving raw materials and finished goods, 3M shipping from factories to distribution centers, Lands’ End fulfilling across sales channels from a unified inventory pool, and American Eagle using Amazon for direct-to-consumer parcel delivery.
  • Rival logistics stocks fell sharply Monday, with UPS and FedEx down as much as about 10% and other players like GXO, XPO and Hub Group also sliding after the announcement.
  • Amazon cast the launch as following its AWS playbook to commercialize internal infrastructure, positioning it against UPS, FedEx, DHL and 3PLs, while leaving public pricing undisclosed and drawing attention to data-use safeguards.
