Amazon Launches GenAI Creators' Fund and Project Nara, Creator Drops Out

The studio-backed pipeline promises fast, grant-funded pilots on a proprietary AWS production platform that raises urgent questions about use of existing creator work and the future of creative jobs.

Overview

  • Amazon MGM Studios and AWS unveiled the GenAI Creators’ Fund and Project Nara on May 27, greenlighting three animated series for Prime Video as pilot projects.
  • Project Nara is a purpose-built, model-agnostic production workspace on AWS that integrates tools like Maya, Blender and Unreal and adds provenance tracking to record how assets are produced.
  • The fund offers grants and gives selected creators five-week deadlines to produce proof-of-concept pilots, a process Amazon says will speed production and cut costs.
  • The rollout drew immediate objections over use of existing character work, with illustrator Loryn Brantz publicly opposing BuzzFeed’s Cupcake project and fans criticizing other titles.
  • After online backlash Jorge R. Gutierrez announced on May 29 that he would withdraw from the Punky Duck project, a move that highlights wider industry concerns about IP, consent and possible job displacement.
