Amazon India to Scrap Referral Fees on Sub-₹1,000 Items From March 16

The initiative targets small sellers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to counter zero-commission rivals.

Overview

  • The waiver covers more than 125 million products across over 1,800 categories, marking a roughly tenfold expansion of last year’s sub-₹300 pilot.
  • Easy Ship fees will drop by more than 20% for items priced below ₹300, and sellers get discounts exceeding 90% on selling fees for the second unit in multi-item shipments.
  • Amazon says sellers could reduce total selling fees by up to 70%, though fixed closing, weight-handling and storage charges still apply.
  • The earlier waiver in 2025 helped drive about a 50% rise in new seller registrations, boosting participation from entrepreneurs outside major metros.
  • The move mirrors Flipkart’s zero-commission terms for goods under ₹1,000 and aligns with Amazon’s India strategy, including a planned investment of over $35 billion by 2030 and a modest stock uptick after the announcement.
