Amazon Ends Kindle Store Access for Pre-2013 Kindles and Fires on May 20

Amazon says roughly three percent of owners are affected.

Overview

  • Amazon confirmed Wednesday that Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets released in 2012 or earlier will lose the ability to buy, borrow, or download books from the Kindle Store on May 20, 2026.
  • Models on the list range from the original 2007 Kindle to the first‑generation Paperwhite and early Kindle Fire tablets, including Fire HD 7 and HD 8.9 from 2012.
  • Books already on affected devices will still open, but no new purchases, Kindle Unlimited borrows, or library loans that route through the Kindle Store will download after the cutoff.
  • Deregistering or factory resetting an affected device after May 20 will block re‑registration and lock it out of Kindle services.
  • To ease upgrades, Amazon is offering 20% off select new Kindles and a limited e‑book credit for eligible customers through June 20, 2026.
