Overview
- A Gazette notification Tuesday, following President Droupadi Murmu’s assent, made Amaravati the state’s only capital.
- The amendment replaces Section 5(2) language to read “Amaravati shall be the new capital,” applies from June 2, 2024, and treats Amaravati as the areas notified under the state’s Capital Region Development Authority law.
- Parliament cleared the bill last week, with the Lok Sabha voting on April 1 and the Rajya Sabha passing it by voice vote on April 2, as YSR Congress Party MPs staged a walkout.
- Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu thanked the President and Prime Minister, called it a win for farmers who gave land, and ordered faster work on Assembly, High Court, Secretariat, roads, and housing projects in the capital zone.
- The decision ends years of uncertainty dating to the 2014 split that left Andhra without a named capital, which farmers who pooled over 33,000 acres see as vindication, while YSRCP leaders question compensation timelines and regional fairness.
