Alpes 2030 Moves All Ice Events From Nice to Lyon

Organisers say the change will cut costs by about €100 million through use of existing Lyon venues.

Overview

  • Cojop will formally finalise the map of sites on June 19, present it to the IOC on June 22, and show it to the public on June 29.
  • Organisers have confirmed that hockey, figure skating, short track and curling are being relocated from Nice to venues in the Lyon metropolis after Nice’s mayor refused a temporary rink at Allianz Riviera.
  • Ministers and organisers give a preliminary estimate of roughly €100 million in budget optimisation from the move while warning that the figures are still being refined.
  • Solideo must redesign an athletes’ village in Lyon to house about 1,500 people and indemnify contractors and firms that had worked on Nice projects as it reorganises for the new ice hub.
  • Political and financial questions remain unresolved because Région Sud says it will not pay for events it no longer hosts and talks continue over matching guarantees between the two regions ahead of IPC validation in early July.
