Overview
- The airport operator Aena announced the plan on Saturday and said the runway will be closed for six days in February 2028, during which all scheduled arrivals and departures will be cancelled.
- The six-day shutdown is embedded in a 19-month renovation budgeted at about €29 million that will include the first runway work in 20 years plus taxiway, lighting and signage upgrades.
- Aena has already notified carriers including Ryanair, easyJet and Iberia, which must reschedule or divert services and advise thousands of passengers about changes.
- Night-time works between 10:45pm and 7:10am across the 19-month project will cause additional phased disruption to flights outside the full-closure window.
- Almería handles up to roughly 800,000 passengers a year with British travellers making up an estimated 55–70% of traffic, so many holidaymakers will be steered to more distant alternatives such as Granada-Jaén (about 77 miles) or Málaga (about 114 miles).
