Allan Legere, ‘Monster of the Miramichi,’ Dies in Federal Custody at 78

Correctional Service Canada has begun a standard review of the in-custody death.

Overview

  • Correctional Service Canada confirmed Legere died Monday at the Edmonton Institution while serving a life sentence.
  • The cause of death has not been disclosed, and CSC policy requires notification of police and the coroner as a review proceeds.
  • Legere, a notorious New Brunswick killer, murdered five people in the late 1980s, including four during a 201‑day escape in 1989.
  • He had been serving a life term since Jan. 22, 1987, and in 1991 received additional life sentences with 25 years of parole ineligibility for the later murders.
  • The Parole Board of Canada most recently denied him release in December, citing a high risk for violent offences and a moderate risk for sexual crimes.
