Allahabad High Court Strikes Down Placard Punishment, Upholds Other Conditions for Noida Student

The division bench ruled that forcing the student to display a shaming placard was humiliating, leaving a lasting stigma.

Overview

  • A bench of Chief Justice Arun Bhansali and Justice Kshitij Shailendra set aside only the placard requirement from the single-judge order in a February 4 ruling.
  • Conditions that remain include a notarised affidavit pledging 95% attendance, a written apology, and police deployment of an anti-romeo mobile squad at university gates.
  • The single judge had earlier quashed Noida International University’s rustication on humanitarian grounds while imposing corrective conditions on the student.
  • The court directed that if the student was re-rusticated solely for not complying with the placard condition, he must get one chance to submit the apology and, subject to attendance compliance, have the rustication set aside.
  • The university had alleged misbehaviour with women students from another institution and cited video recordings to justify its March 30, 2025 action.
