Alibaba’s Qwen Tops 3 Billion Downloads, Becoming Most-Downloaded Open-Model Family

The surge signals a shift in developer mindshare toward permissively licensed Chinese models with a clear route for Alibaba to monetize via its cloud.

Overview

  • Hugging Face’s Aug. 14 state-of-open-models report and Alibaba statements show Qwen has surpassed 3 billion cumulative global downloads, making it the most-downloaded open-model family.
  • On Hugging Face alone Qwen recorded about 2.045 billion downloads in 2026 compared with roughly 418 million for Google and 227 million for Meta, a concentration that understates total use because China’s ModelScope activity is not included.
  • Alibaba has published more than 460 open Qwen models and the ecosystem has produced over 300,000 derivative models, evidence that developers are self-hosting, fine-tuning, and building products on top of open weights.
  • Alibaba has expanded Qwen distribution through Alibaba Cloud into markets such as Southeast Asia and Africa and is reported to be exploring revenue-sharing or commercial terms for large cloud deployments while independent technical and commercial reviews remain pending.
  • Chinese labs are releasing much larger open models, including mixture-of-experts designs, and the rise of Qwen highlights growing competition over developer attention, export-control questions, and safety and governance issues to watch next.
