Alfalfa Sprouts Recalled After Multistate E. Coli and Salmonella Outbreak

Federal investigators linked the illnesses to Everything Sprouts products, raising new regulatory and legal scrutiny of the Minneapolis supplier.

Overview

  • Federal health officials say 55 people in 15 states have been sickened by the outbreak, with 46 E. coli infections, seven Salmonella infections, two people infected with both organisms, and four hospitalizations as of Aug. 24.
  • The FDA traced the illnesses to alfalfa sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts, LLC and the company voluntarily recalled specified lots and barcodes of Everything Sprouts and Calco branded products that were distributed May 27 to Aug. 21 to stores and wholesalers in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
  • Laboratory testing found multiple strains of Shiga toxin–producing E. coli and a strain of Salmonella Agona in the investigation, and officials say some people had co-infections; STEC can cause severe complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome, especially in young children and older adults.
  • Everything Sprouts says its own testing found no problems, but the company faces heightened scrutiny after an FDA on-site inspection Aug. 19 and a March 2025 FDA warning letter that documented a leaking roof and dirty surfaces at the facility, and at least two sick consumers are pursuing legal claims.
  • The FDA and CDC advise consumers to throw away recalled sprouts, thoroughly clean any surfaces they touched, and for young children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems to avoid raw sprouts because warm, wet sprouting conditions favor bacterial growth and can spread contamination through supply chains.
