Aldi Tops February Price Check as Tesco Clubcard Leads on 225-Item Shop

Loyalty pricing combined with basket size determines the cheapest option.

Overview

  • Which? found Aldi cheapest for an 89‑item basket in February at £161.56, narrowly ahead of Lidl at £162.75.
  • Shoppers paid the most at Waitrose for the same 89 items at £217.02, a £55.46 difference versus Aldi, with typical savings versus Tesco of about £24 per shop.
  • On a larger 225‑item list, Tesco was cheapest for Clubcard holders at £580.35, edging Asda at £584.32, while the Tesco total rose to £629.25 without Clubcard prices.
  • Which? includes regular offers and loyalty prices in its calculations but excludes multibuys, and discounters are omitted from the 225‑item comparison because they do not stock many branded lines.
  • Separate analysis by the Independent of a 30‑item own‑brand basket also put Aldi first at £45.14 across February, with Lidl next at £46.29, excluding promotions.
