Aldi Tells Shoppers to Freeze Sliced Bananas to Stop Browning

The push aims to cut household food waste to help shoppers save money.

Overview

  • Aldi, partnering with food storage expert Kate Hall, is urging shoppers to peel and slice bananas, freeze the pieces on a lined tray, then store them in a resealable bag to prevent browning and mush.
  • The freezer-first step turns overripe fruit into ready portions for banana ice cream, smoothies, sorbets, or chocolate peanut-butter bites.
  • Hall says the same tray-and-bag approach works for other produce, with sliced cucumbers able to be frozen for smoothies or used like ice cubes in drinks.
  • The advice follows Aldi research that found the average Brit throws away about £387 of food each year and that seven in ten shoppers buy items they expect to bin.
  • Aldi’s national sustainability director Luke Emery says the retailer is cutting waste with suppliers and markdowns and now wants more homes to use freezers to keep food out of the bin.
