- The Government of Alberta, which outlined the Councillor Accountability Framework on Thursday, plans to table a bill within weeks to set provincewide standards for councillor conduct.
- Under the plan, conduct complaints would go to an independent investigator chosen from a provincial roster, with municipalities usually covering the cost of the probe.
- Appeals would go to a commissioner from the same roster, and the minister could start investigations and reject an appeal recommendation, with the province paying for probes it launches.
- The proposal also adds transparency by publishing municipal officials’ salaries and by requiring chief administrative officers to report when they use general administrative powers to act without a council bylaw.
