Overview
- A charter bus carrying 37 adults and children hit the median on Highway 43 about one kilometre west of Debolt around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, rolled once and came to rest on its wheels.
- A 50-year-old woman from Grande Prairie was declared dead at the scene, and 22 people were taken to hospital with injuries of varying severity, including six listed as serious.
- Paramedics transported the six seriously injured by ambulance, another bus took 16 with minor injuries to hospital for assessment and release, and uninjured passengers were taken to the Debolt fire hall.
- Collision reconstructionists examined the scene and the highway reopened Sunday, while victim services and RCMP liaison officers were activated for those affected.
- A local pastor said the passengers were church members returning from a Bible competition, reported that a church leader was the fatality, and noted updates that three of the initially serious adults were discharged, two await surgery, one remains hospitalized with multiple fractures, and a six-year-old is awaiting further assessment of leg injuries.
