Alamo Drafthouse Renames Austin Theater the Matthew McConaughey Cinema

A private Aug. 10 dedication will pair a plaque unveiling with an advance screening tied to McConaughey’s new film, signaling local recognition through a theatrical honor.

Overview

  • Alamo Drafthouse will formally rename its Mueller location the Matthew McConaughey Cinema at a private dedication on Monday, Aug. 10, the company announced.
  • The ceremony will include McConaughey introducing an early screening of The Rivals of Amziah King, a post-screening Q&A with director Andrew Patterson and lead actress Angelina LookingGlass, and a commemorative plaque unveiling.
  • Although the Austin event is private, Alamo has scheduled related public showings including a one-night screening in Denton on Aug. 16 and additional ticketed events in other cities with tickets already on sale.
  • The renaming continues Alamo Drafthouse’s practice of honoring filmmakers at select venues, adding McConaughey to a list that includes Christopher Nolan, Bong Joon Ho, Spike Lee and Pam Grier.
  • City leaders praised the move as civic recognition of McConaughey’s ties to Austin, and the timing ties the honor to a promotional push for the film that premiered at SXSW and opens widely in mid-August.
