Alabama Rolls Out Chip-Enabled EBT Cards Statewide
The upgrade follows a successful pilot to curb benefit theft through EMV-style chips with default purchase limits.
Overview
- The Alabama Department of Human Resources says new EBT cards have been mailed to all recipients and are expected to arrive in the coming days.
- Cardholders must activate the new card within 180 days by entering the card number, date of birth, ZIP code, three-digit security code, and expiration date through EBT Customer Service.
- Out-of-state and online purchases are blocked by default, and users must unlock those options via the ConnectEBT app or website or by calling 1-800-997-8888.
- After activation, recipients should destroy their old card, lock the new card when not in use, and insert the chip at checkout rather than swiping.
- DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner says the chip-enabled cards proved easy to use in the pilot and offer stronger protection for benefits.
