Al-Qaeda-Linked JNIM Blocks Roads Into Bamako as Tuareg Rebels Press North

The road closures tighten pressure on Mali’s junta by choking trade routes into the capital.

  • JNIM, which began the blockade Thursday, halted inbound traffic to Bamako and left hundreds of trucks carrying goods stuck on corridors to Conakry, Abidjan and Dakar.
  • Transport firms reported long backups that reached the Senegal border town of Kidira as entry was denied and only vehicles already in Bamako were allowed to leave.
  • JNIM, an al-Qaeda affiliate, warned of reprisals for anyone driving toward Bamako or the nearby garrison city of Kati, according to statements reported by AFP.
  • A memorial for Defence Minister Sadio Camara, killed in last weekend’s coordinated attacks claimed by JNIM and the Tuareg FLA, took place under heavy security with junta leader Assimi Goïta in attendance.
  • The Tuareg FLA said Friday it seized the strategic northern base at Tessalit after Malian and Russian units withdrew, adding to its capture of Kidal and further eroding the junta’s control.
