Akawa Butte Fire Containment Rises to 19 Percent as Mop-Up Deepens

• Firefighters report containment has increased to 19% after crews used handheld infrared cameras to locate and extinguish lingering hot spots along the fire edge.
• Hand and dozer lines now surround the fire and structural protection teams have finished 200-foot defensible buffers around homes and buildings.
• Evacuation orders and federal land closures remain in place with shelters open at Sisters High School and designated large-animal facilities for resident safety.
• Oregon State Fire Marshal task forces are completing assignments and some crews have been or will be reassigned to the nearby Bench Fire as mop-up progress permits.
• Crews have advanced mop-up roughly 100–150 feet around much of the perimeter and up to 400 feet in places toward a 300-foot interior goal, but hot, dry, breezy weather continues to pose a threat to lines.
