Akamai to Buy LayerX for $205 Million to Add Browser-Level AI Controls

The move signals a push to govern AI at the point where work happens in the browser.

Akamai, which announced a definitive agreement Thursday, will acquire LayerX for about $205 million with closing expected in the third quarter of 2026 subject to customary conditions.
LayerX’s team, including co-founders Or Eshed and David Vaisbrud, will join Akamai’s Zero Trust organization.
Akamai said the deal extends its security into the browser so security teams can see and control how workers and AI agents use tools like generative AI and SaaS without forcing a new browser.
The company guided to roughly $10 million in annual recurring revenue for LayerX by year-end and about $0.12 dilution to non-GAAP earnings per share in fiscal 2026.
LayerX’s platform tracks actions in browsers, apps, and developer tools and can block risky prompts or data pastes, find unapproved AI use, prevent AI-driven data loss, and protect AI browsers and plugins.
