Aizawl Civic Polls Set for April 21 With 68 Candidates and Strong Women’s Presence

Tight election rules now bar new hiring and transfers through April 30.

Overview

  • The candidate list, confirmed Monday after no withdrawals, stands at 68 with 28 women contesting across 19 wards.
  • The ZPM, MNF and Congress each fielded 19 candidates, while the BJP named 11, setting up contests in every ward.
  • More than 2.37 lakh people are eligible to vote, including about 1.28 lakh women, and counting is scheduled for April 27.
  • The State Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct, in force since March 18, blocks new hiring, tests and transfers in the municipality without its written approval.
  • The MNF released its manifesto, accused the ruling ZPM of delaying the polls and doing “cosmetic” road repairs, and warned of legal action over sexist online abuse of women candidates, citing attacks on R Lalnunthari.
