Airbus Tests ‘Bird of Prey’ Drone Interceptor That Fires Mini Missiles at Kamikaze Drones

The low-cost, drone-launched interceptors aim to cut the price of stopping mass-produced attack drones.

Overview

  • Airbus says a test in northern Germany showed its Bird of Prey drone finding, tracking, and hitting a mock kamikaze drone with a Mark 1 missile only nine months after concept.
  • The carrier platform, a modified Do‑DT25, is designed to launch up to eight small air‑to‑air rockets in flight to break up single threats or swarms.
  • Frankenburg Technologies’ Mark 1 rockets measure about 65 centimeters, weigh under 2 kilograms, reach up to 1.5 kilometers, and fly at high subsonic speed, according to the company.
  • Airbus says the system links to NATO‑compatible command networks so units can task it as part of a layered air defense.
  • Further trials run through 2026 with live‑warhead shots planned, and Germany has not awarded a contract as officials target deliveries of vetted counter‑drone systems from autumn 2027.
