Air India’s First Retrofitted 787-8 Lands in Delhi to Kick Off $400 Million Widebody Upgrade

The milestone signals Tata’s push to modernize Air India’s long-haul product after delays.

Overview

  • VT-ANT, the first refurbished Boeing 787-8, reached Delhi Monday night after a nonstop ferry from San Bernardino, marking the programme’s first completed jet.
  • The aircraft debuts a three-class layout with Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins, plus new seats, larger seatback screens, and refreshed galleys and lavatories.
  • Interior work took place at Boeing’s Victorville modification center, and AeroPro in San Bernardino repainted the jet after FAA clearances for the return flight.
  • Air India says all 26 legacy 787-8s are slated to be refurbished by mid-2027, with 13 777-300ER upgrades starting in early 2027 and targeting completion by October 2028.
  • A second 787-8 is already in refurbishment, which points to a steadier pipeline after last year’s supply-chain and geopolitical delays.
