Overview
- Air India will operate direct, non-stop services linking Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati with Dubai and Abu Dhabi from August 4, 2026, the Assam chief minister announced on Monday.
- Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement on X and tied the launch to recent removals of travel advisories for Assam by several countries, including EU member states on June 20.
- With the UAE links in place, Guwahati will have direct international connections to four countries: the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Singapore and Bhutan.
- State officials say the new routes will cut travel time for the Northeast’s diaspora, students and business travellers and aim to boost tourism, trade and investment for Assam.
- The government frames this as an intermediate step in a longer plan to build Guwahati into a Southeast Asia transit hub and has named Vietnam as a target for future direct services.
