Air India 777 Returns to Delhi After Oil-Pressure Failure Triggers Mid-Flight Engine Shutdown

DGCA has launched a supervised probe into the oil‑pressure failure and the aircraft is grounded for inspection.

Overview

  • Flight AI887 from Delhi to Mumbai turned back shortly after take-off and landed safely, with no injuries reported.
  • Pilots observed the right engine’s oil pressure drop to zero during flap retraction, shut down the engine, and executed an emergency return in line with procedures.
  • The Boeing 777-300ER (registration VT-ALS) carried roughly 330–355 people; Flightradar24 data showed a take-off around 6:31 am and a return within about 20 minutes.
  • Air India arranged an alternate aircraft and assisted passengers, while inspection and rectification of the grounded jet are in progress under DGCA oversight.
  • The incident is being probed by Air India’s Permanent Investigation Board under DGCA supervision, and a preliminary records review showed no prior abnormal oil consumption for this airframe.
