Air Fryer Caused Grimoldby Takeaway Fire That Killed Girl, 11, and Man, 45

Officials are urging careful use of air fryers and working smoke alarms following the fatalities.

  • Lincolnshire Police confirmed an 11-year-old girl and a 45-year-old man died after a fire at the Golden Phoenix on Manby Middlegate in Grimoldby at around 6:10am on February 18.
  • Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue determined the blaze was accidental after finding an air fryer ignited nearby items during a joint investigation with police and a regional fire investigations dog.
  • Five other people were taken to hospital; a woman in her 30s remains in a serious condition, while two men in their 40s and two children under ten have been discharged.
  • The response involved five fire crews, six ambulance crews, paramedics and an air ambulance, with four patients taken to Grimsby’s Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital and one to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre.
  • Authorities issued safety guidance on using air fryers in line with manufacturer instructions and maintaining working smoke detectors, a coroner’s report will follow, and victims were named locally as Yu Li and his daughter Sophie.
