Air Force Unveils ‘Air Expeditionary Wing 2.0’ for FY 2027 Deployments

The service says the redesign improves readiness for high-end conflict by presenting cohesive, combat-ready units.

Overview

  • AEW 2.0 creates a modular, scalable wing-level unit that can command and project platform-agnostic airpower in any theater.
  • Formations will be built about 18 months before deployment so all components can train and certify together as a single team.
  • The construct aligns with the AFFORGEN cycle and preserves capacity at home stations to sustain in-garrison missions.
  • Deployed command and control will shift to Wing Operations Centers in place of A-Staffs, with group command opportunities maintained.
  • The model draws on lessons from XAB, ATF, DCW and ACE, refined in exercises such as Mosaic Tiger 26-1 that tested CABS consolidation and operations under degraded communications.
