Air Force Moves NGAP Into Competitive Prototype Phase With GE and Pratt

The build-and-test campaign will decide which adaptive-cycle engine designs inform future fighters and shape whether the service can meet its targeted 2030 integration timeline.

  • Oversight bodies remain more cautious: a Government Accountability Office estimate put production entry no earlier than 2031, and the service has not yet chosen a winner or finalized an aircraft integration plan.
  • Adaptive-cycle engines aim to shift airflow to give high combat thrust for short bursts and improved cruise fuel efficiency, while also supplying greater electrical and thermal power for advanced sensors and weapons.
  • If adaptive engines are not ready when the first sixth-generation fighters begin production, the Air Force may use interim or upgraded legacy engines and retrofit adaptive cores later, a path that raises procurement, testing, and schedule risks for the fleet.
