Air Force Confirms Qatari 747 Interim Air Force One Finishes Testing for Summer Debut

The stopgap addresses urgent gaps in the aging fleet.

Overview

  • The VC-25B “Bridge” jet, a former Qatari Boeing 747-8, completed modification and flight testing Friday, with the Air Force saying it will roll out this summer as a temporary Air Force One until new aircraft arrive in 2028.
  • L3Harris handled the mission-systems work, adding secure communications, while officials have not disclosed whether high-end features such as nuclear command connectivity, in-flight refueling, or self-defense systems were included.
  • Leaders previously estimated the conversion at roughly $400 million using reallocated funds, and reporting says the plane keeps most of its lavish Qatari interior, with media seats separated by a curtain rather than a dedicated press cabin.
  • To speed training and support, the Air Force leased an Atlas Air 747-8 freighter for pilot qualification from October 2025 through February 2026 and bought two ex-Lufthansa 747-8s for training and spare parts, while L3Harris performed modifications in Waco, Texas.
  • Acceptance of the foreign gift in May 2025 continues to face ethics and security questions under the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, and Trump has said the aircraft would go to his presidential library after its interim service.
