Air Canada Halts Toronto and Montreal Flights to JFK as Jet Fuel Costs Soar

The decision reflects a jet-fuel spike linked to Iran-related supply shocks.

Overview

  • Air Canada, which announced the change Friday, will pause three daily Toronto flights and one from Montreal to JFK from June 1 to Oct. 25.
  • Service to the New York area continues through LaGuardia and Newark with roughly 34 daily flights, and affected customers will receive alternate bookings.
  • The airline cited jet-fuel prices that have roughly doubled since late February, with Argus estimating about $4.32 per gallon versus $2.50 before the Iran war.
  • Europe may have only about six weeks of jet-fuel supply left, the International Energy Agency warned, which could force airlines to cut flights as summer nears.
  • Carriers are passing higher costs to travelers through new fees and schedule trims, with examples including WestJet’s temporary $60 surcharge and KLM canceling 160 flights next month.
