Air Canada CEO Apologizes Over English-Only Message as LaGuardia Reopens Crash Runway

The apology signals growing pressure over Air Canada’s bilingual obligations.

Overview

  • Runway 4/22 at LaGuardia reopened Thursday morning after the plane and fire truck were removed and the surface was repaired and inspected for safe operations.
  • Michael Rousseau apologized Thursday for not being able to express himself in French and said he is still learning after 84 complaints and a parliamentary summons to testify by May 1, as Prime Minister Mark Carney called his video a lack of judgment and Quebec leaders urged him to resign.
  • The Sunday night collision killed pilots Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther when a Montreal-to-New York CRJ-900 struck a Port Authority fire truck, and the two men’s remains were flown back to Canada Wednesday while Air Canada said four injured passengers or crew remain hospitalized.
  • Investigators said the truck was cleared to cross the runway about 20 seconds before impact and that the airport’s surface alert system did not warn controllers because the truck lacked a transponder and the sensor network struggled to flag vehicles merging near the runway.
  • The NTSB is leading the probe with Canada’s Transportation Safety Board participating, and a preliminary report is expected within 30 days after wreckage from both vehicles was towed away Wednesday.
