AIIMS Rajkot Intern’s Death: Five Classmates Arrested, Allowed to Take Exams Under Police Custody

Police say the case includes abetment of suicide under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the SC/ST Act.

Overview

  • The 25-year-old intern, Ratankumar Meghwal, was found dead on March 14 near railway tracks with a 17-page note alleging assault by classmates, and his laptop, phones, medical files and ID were recovered at the scene.
  • Following a complaint by the victim’s father, Gandhigram police arrested five classmates and formally booked them under the new penal code and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
  • A local court has permitted the accused final-year MBBS students to sit their examinations under strict police custody with escorted transport to and from the hall.
  • Offences cited include BNS Section 108 for abetment of suicide and acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention, alongside charges under the SC/ST Act.
  • Investigators are reviewing reports that the victim had attempted suicide in January after naming the same five students, a lapse that has drawn scrutiny over the earlier lack of formal action.
