AHSAA Approves Public-Private Postseason Split for 2026–28

The move marks the association’s first statewide split following a protracted fight over CHOOSE Act eligibility.

Overview

  • The Central Board voted 13-2 to separate championship brackets starting in fall 2026 for a two-year cycle.
  • Public schools will compete in six classes with Class 6A now the largest, while private schools will play in two divisions, A and AA, as Class 7A is eliminated.
  • The private-school enrollment multiplier and competitive-balance formula are removed, and CHOOSE Act funds will no longer affect athletic eligibility.
  • Regular-season scheduling remains open between public and private schools, with playoff formats and sport-by-sport details to be finalized in upcoming meetings.
  • Private-school leaders will meet in person Jan. 30 in Montgomery with Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth and AISA’s director to consider responses, as political criticism and logistical concerns over travel and revenue continue.
