After Lunar Eclipse, Major Indian Temples Reopen Following Purification Rites

Temple boards followed Agama rules using IMD timings to schedule closures and purification rites.

Overview

  • Tirumala’s Sri Venkateswara temple and other TTD-run shrines reopened Tuesday evening after Suddhi and related ceremonies, with darshan resuming at 8:30 pm following a closure of over 10 hours.
  • TTD shut temple doors nearly six hours before the eclipse in line with custom, cancelled Arjitha Sevas and VIP darshan categories, and sequenced post-eclipse rites before allowing devotees in.
  • Prominent temples across Uttar Pradesh, including Ayodhya’s Ram temple and Varanasi’s Kashi Vishwanath, suspended darshan during the eclipse and resumed after ritual cleaning and bathing of deities.
  • Several Tamil Nadu temples, such as Marundeeswarar in Chennai and Sri Ranganatha Swamy in Srirangam, curtailed access during the event, which the IMD said was visible in its ending phase in Chennai and Kanyakumari from around 6:17 pm.
  • One notable exception was Datia’s Pitambara Peeth in Madhya Pradesh, which stayed open during the eclipse and conducted special chanting while regular rituals were paused.
