After Latifpura Eviction, Water-Tank Protest Ends as Jalandhar Promises Rehabilitation

Officials pledged speedy allotment of homes to displaced families following the court-ordered clearance.

Overview

  • Acting on a Punjab and Haryana High Court directive, the district administration began a pre-dawn operation around 4:30 a.m. to clear encroachments in Latifpura and reclaimed the site.
  • Members of the Latifpura Rehabilitation Committee climbed a water tank in Boota Mandi to protest the action and later climbed down after receiving assurances on resettlement.
  • Deputy commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal announced allotment of 49 flats and 15 plots at the Bibi Bhani Complex and Surya Enclave with allotments targeted within 24 hours.
  • The administration said the 5% allotment charge will be waived, necessary repairs to flats will be carried out, a dedicated grievance team is in place, and legal aid is available.
  • The clearance follows years of litigation, including a 2022 demolition of about 50 houses and a 2025 order to remove remaining tents, with residents continuing to contest rehabilitation terms.
