After Drone Shutdown at Guarulhos, LATAM 777 Aborts High‑Speed Takeoff

The twin incidents have triggered formal investigations after operations returned to normal.

Overview

  • Brazil’s civil aviation regulator recorded roughly three hours of suspended operations at Guarulhos due to unauthorized drones, with 32 flights diverted and eight canceled.
  • São Paulo’s Military Police said special operations units used signal jammers to counter about seven to eight drones detected over approach and departure paths.
  • Airlines diverted aircraft to airports including Viracopos, São José dos Campos, Galeão and Confins, and reported assisting affected passengers once flights resumed.
  • Hours after the reopening, LATAM flight LA8146 to Lisbon in a Boeing 777 aborted takeoff at around 178 knots, with maximum braking leading to overheated brakes that were cooled by firefighting crews; the flight was canceled and no injuries were reported.
  • LATAM and the airport said procedures were executed safely, ANAC reiterated that drone use near airports is illegal and dangerous, and Cenipa and police are pursuing inquiries into the drone incursions and the aircraft incident.
