Afghan Evacuee Dies Less Than a Day After ICE Arrest in Texas

Advocates seek independent oversight after officials cited a medical emergency.

Overview

  • ICE says Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, 41, reported shortness of breath and chest pain at a Dallas field office, was taken to Parkland Hospital for overnight observation, then experienced tongue swelling during breakfast before being pronounced dead at 9:10 a.m.
  • Family and AfghanEvac say he was detained in a targeted operation outside his Richardson apartment as he prepared to take his children to school.
  • DHS describes him as a criminal illegal alien with 2025 arrests for alleged SNAP fraud and theft and an expired 2021 parole; family and advocates say there were no convictions and present a certificate indicating he served alongside U.S. Special Forces.
  • The cause of death has not been publicly confirmed, the Dallas County Medical Examiner has not released findings, and ICE says the case remains under investigation as advocates press for DHS inspector general and congressional review.
  • Paktyawal’s death is at least the 12th reported in ICE custody this year, following a record tally last year during a period of expanded immigration detention.
