Affidavits Allege Vodka Hazing Before NAU Student's Death as Three Fraternity Officers Face Charges

Prosecutors are reviewing the case pending the medical examiner’s determination of cause of death.

Overview

  • Newly released probable-cause affidavits say four pledges were required to finish two 1.75-liter bottles of vodka in a game called “don’t f--- your brother,” with a witness suggesting the liquor might have been diluted.
  • Witnesses described abnormal snoring, gagging and breathing overnight, searched alcohol poisoning symptoms, repositioned the student, and called 911 at 8:44 a.m. when he was found unresponsive.
  • Arrested Delta Tau Delta officers were identified as vice president Ryan Creech, new member educator Carter Eslick and treasurer Riley Cass, each facing a hazing charge after initial court appearances.
  • A Coconino County judge called the episode a foolish incident that got out of hand and noted there was no apparent malice, according to remarks in court.
  • NAU suspended the chapter and condemned hazing, Delta Tau Delta’s national office reiterated its anti-hazing stance, and police said the student’s name will be withheld until autopsy findings are complete.
