Aena February Traffic Sets Records at Madrid and Barcelona as Galicia Slides on Airline Cuts

Records at the big hubs contrast with steep losses in Galicia driven by Ryanair pullbacks and an impending runway closure.

Overview

  • Aena reported 25,434,678 passengers across the group in February, up 3.7% year on year, with 20,555,745 in Spain (+2.8%) and roughly 108,000 extra travelers tied to a January 18 rail accident shift.
  • Adolfo Suárez MadridBarajas hit a February record with 5,077,072 passengers (+5.3%) and moved 65,279 tonnes of cargo (+6.5%), while BarcelonaEl Prat set a February peak with 3,895,934 travelers (+3.8%) and 17,746 tonnes of cargo (+24%).
  • Galicia’s three-airport network is down about 1,967 passengers per day versus a year ago as Santiago fell to 130,533 in February (−29.8%), remains the worst performer in Spain, and faces a full runway closure from April 23 to May 27.
  • Vigo handled 74,548 passengers in February (−4.4%), reflecting Ryanair route withdrawals and winter storms, even as Binter’s Canary Islands services grew; low-cost carriers now account for only about 20.7% of its traffic, with Vueling the lone remaining LCC.
  • A Coruña inched up to 98,886 passengers in February (+0.3%) but faces the loss of Volotea’s Valencia and Málaga routes in early April over funding terms, while Córdoba jumped to 3,017 (+520.8%) on Vueling and Binter despite a weeklong weather closure.
