Overview
- A large quinceañera in Puerto del Valle, Salamanca, held Saturday night produced a mass intoxication after guests drank shared tequila and many later sought emergency care.
- Patients first reported headache and malaise and then developed blurred vision, vomiting, hypothermia and deep drowsiness as dozens were taken to local and regional hospitals.
- Official counts are still changing: state health authorities have confirmed at least three deaths and 14–16 hospitalizations while the state prosecutor has reported four fatalities.
- The Fiscalía, Agentes de Investigación Criminal, peritos and Semefo have collected bottles and samples and are running toxicological and chemical analyses to identify whether industrial or denatured alcohol caused the poisonings.
- Several hospitalized people are minors and some are in serious condition; toxicology results will determine potential criminal charges and guide public warnings about illicitly adulterated liquor.
