ADNOC Confirms Small Fuel Leak From Tanker Hit by Iranian Drones Off Oman

Satellite images back the leak during a period of severe disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.

Overview

  • The ADNOC Logistics & Services vessel Barakah, which was struck May 4, remains at anchor off Oman and released a small amount of bunker fuel.
  • Copernicus Sentinel images on May 7 and 9 showed a white trail behind the Barakah consistent with oil, and later satellite passes no longer showed the slick.
  • ADNOC did not disclose the volume of fuel that leaked, and Oman's Maritime Security Centre has not responded to requests for comment.
  • The company said no crew were injured in the drone strike and the tanker was not carrying cargo at the time.
  • Tehran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted traffic through the key energy corridor, leaving hundreds of ships stuck in the Gulf.
