Adif Advances Station Upgrades as França Canopy Exterior Finishes and Chamartín Reopens Main Entrance

Phased, EU-backed works prioritize capacity growth alongside preservation of century-old structures.

Overview

  • Adif says the exterior renewal of Barcelona’s Estació de França canopy is complete after a €5.5 million project that installed 10,900 m² of polycarbonate and 12,900 m² of galvanized steel without halting service.
  • From platform level the refurbishment still appears unfinished, with large protective nets remaining while a second phase covering façade and auxiliary areas awaits contracting with no set budget or schedule.
  • The wrought-iron canopy at Estació de França spans 23,800 m² and 29 meters in height, covering twelve tracks and seven platforms in a station that handles about 2.3 million passengers annually.
  • In Madrid, Adif Alta Velocidad reopened Chamartín’s principal access from the plaza and added 2,112 m² to the main high-speed vestibule, which now totals 6,712 m², plus a new 1,325 m² covered waiting area.
  • The Chamartín overhaul totals €557 million with NextGenerationEU funding, targets completion next year to double high-speed capacity, and responds to surging demand as passengers rose to 44.4 million in 2024 from 36.2 million in 2023.
