Adelphi Hotel Operator Charged With 20 Safety Offences

The case now moves to Crown Court for a June 4 hearing following a council probe into unsafe wardrobes and window controls.

Overview

  • Britannia Hotels Ltd, which runs the Adelphi, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court Thursday and the case was sent to Liverpool Crown Court with a plea and trial preparation hearing set for June 4.
  • Liverpool City Council brought the prosecution through its environmental health team under the Health and Safety Act 1984, naming two limited companies linked to Britannia.
  • Charge sheets allege failures from January 2021 to August 2025, including not securing wardrobes to stop them toppling and not fitting window restrictors to prevent windows opening too far.
  • The counts reference the 2022 death of 21-year-old Chloe Haynes after a wardrobe fell in room 510 and a separate August 2025 incident in which three-year-old Valencia Verdin suffered head injuries when a cabinet fell, leading to treatment at Alder Hey.
  • Britannia’s lawyer said no plea would be indicated at this stage, and the company said it is cooperating with the legal process and offered sympathies, as prosecutors outlined claims of unstable furniture and hazardous windows at the landmark hotel.
