Accenture to Buy IBM’s Majority Stake in UniCredit Technology Joint Venture
The plan aims to speed UniCredit’s move to cloud, data and AI subject to regulatory clearance.
Overview
- Accenture announced on Friday that it will acquire IBM’s controlling stake in the joint venture that runs much of UniCredit’s core technology, shifting operational control to Accenture.
- Under the deal Accenture will expand infrastructure and operations management so UniCredit can roll out a multi-year programme to standardize systems across its 13 European markets.
- IBM will remain a key supplier, continuing to provide IBM Z mainframes, enterprise software and consulting for mission-critical workloads while Accenture leads modernization work.
- The transaction is conditional on regulatory approvals, customary closing steps and employee information and consultation processes in affected countries before work can begin.
- Markets gave a muted positive response and the arrangement preserves mainframe reliability while enabling faster cloud, data and AI deployments, with potential effects on local IT jobs and the timing of product rollouts.
