Academy Names 16 Student Academy Award Winners as International Schools Lead

Overview

• The Academy publicly released the 16 winners on Wednesday, Aug. 5, across four categories: Alternative/Experimental, Animation, Documentary and Narrative.
• Schools from outside the United States took nine of the 12 awards and swept both the Animation and Narrative categories, the largest share ever for international programs.
• Several programs won Student Oscars for the first time, including Concordia University, Duke University, ESMA in France, ESCAC in Spain, St. Joost in the Netherlands and Warsaw Film School in Poland.
• The presentation ceremony will be held at TIFF Lightbox on Sept. 14 in partnership with Rolex, where gold, silver and bronze placements will be announced and winners will receive education programming, networking and access to Academy members.
• All Student Academy Award winners are now eligible to compete in the 99th Academy Awards short‑film categories, continuing a long pipeline that has produced dozens of Oscar nominations and multiple winners and which may increase global visibility for non‑U.S. film schools.
