Abnormal-Load Convoy Re-Timed to 7 April After UK Motorway Crashes and Fires

Officials shifted the 600-tonne transformer move to overnight to limit hold-ups for drivers.

Overview

  • Gloucestershire Police and highway teams, which met Thursday, moved the escorted transformer operation to overnight on Tuesday 7 April and said smaller loads will still run this weekend.
  • The A1(M) southbound between junctions 41 and 40 near Pontefract closed from about 4am Thursday for a police-led incident, with diversions set via the M62 and A1 and emergency services on scene.
  • Traffic on the M4 westbound between junctions 19 and 20 was held Thursday for a vehicle fire before all lanes reopened with only short delays, according to National Highways and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue.
  • In Greater Manchester late Thursday, a single-car crash caused a fire and a full westbound closure on the M62 between junctions 12 and 11, with police, firefighters and traffic officers responding.
  • Wednesday’s seven-vehicle crash on the M65 at junction 3 near Blackburn closed the westbound carriageway for hours and caused long queues, and Lancashire Police later confirmed only minor injuries.
